Central America Data reported that tourists coming to Costa Rica for fun and sun and affordable plastic surgery reached 2,107,000 between November 2007 and October 2008. The numbers simply indicates how plastic surgery in Costa Rica surfaced out as a major medical tourism destination that most American medical tourist will choose to visit. Though the country’s business leaders from its tourism sector admit that the rate of growth continues to increase but at a slower rhythm, tourism and plastic surgery in Costa Rica will be stable despite the international uncertainty.

“Expectations for this year are that there will be an increase of 8-9% in visitor arrivals, after taking external aspects into consideration,” said Alberto Lopez, executive director of the National Tourism Chamber (Canatur).

Costa Rica is hailed as the “The closest thing to heaven on earth” by the National Geographic Channel this year. In addition to already being a great vacation destination, Costa Rica is also one of solid countries that promotes high quality, affordable plastic surgery. Affordability and quality are the two main factors that drives foreign patients to get plastic surgery in Costa Rica.

Medical care is considered very expensive if they are uninsured. There are roughly 48 million citizens without health insurance in the United States alone. An additional unaccounted millions more who are under-insured, and an estimated 120 million without dental insurance. These individuals have to pay for their health care coming from their own pockets. Thus, if they can’t afford such overwhelming plastic surgery cost and health care, it is not accessible. In 2007 an estimated 750,000 Americans left the US for exotic destinations such as Costa Rica, India, and Singapore seeking lower plastic surgery cost and other medical procedures. Plastic surgery cost in Costa Rica offers cost of savings from 40%-80% U.S. list prices. In terms of quality, affordable plastic surgery in countries with low labor costs is expected to continue because of high-quality healthcare providers internationally. Throughout the world today, from India to Latin America, increasingly one is able to find modern, high-quality healthcare and this is evidenced by the boom in JCI-accredited Hospitals.

In terms of quality, majority of the doctors in Costa Rica spent much of their time maintaining the country’s excellent public medical care system. Many of Costa Rica’s medical professionals are American Medical Board certified, guaranteeing training on a par with their U.S. counterparts. The Health Ministry has identified accreditation as an important part of driving quality in healthcare upwards and the CIMA Hospital in San Jose has already received its accreditation. In addition to licensing by the Health Ministry, a system of professional societies oversees the membership of a number of specialties. Medical doctors, surgeons, and dentists all have dedicated societies that promote new skills and the maintenance of standards throughout their professions.
