Photo contests are widespread, a quick Google search will return hundred’s of results. Online photo contests usually allow participants to upload your submission and enter your picture right then and there. Wait for the submission period to end and see the results of judging. Competing in picture contests is a fun way to develop your skills. You will see various styles and techniques on how to produce high quality images. Picture contests are also considered a healthy past time and a fruitful hobby if you have plans of becoming a professional in the future.

Before joining any photography contest, the first thing you should do is read the submission guidelines and the contest rules. There is no point in going whole submission process for a photography contest if you are only going to be rejected because your picture is the wrong size or you may have enhanced it using an image software. Also, remember that every photo competition is different, but there are a few general guidelines. Some photo competitions may have special rules to follow, so always read them before hand.

Always make sure that your photos are clear and well-lit. Photos that are dramatic, unique and eye-catching always make it to the top or the honorable mentions if not a win. You can do this by following the basic photography techniques like the rule of the thirds, correct lighting and photo composition. Techniques and cameras also play a vital role in photo contests. Whether you joined to compete, to learn or to get some experience, the most important thing to consider in photo contest is the fun you get and the chance to improve your skill.
